Nature is always giving very valuable lessons to new innovations. Even though people took the ideas, they didn’t take the essence behind the nature. They looked at the bird and took the idea of flying. They made two wings and use carbonic fuel to fly it. They didn’t care how the bird use only wings to fly. It doesn’t need fuel!
This is where “Biomimicry” comes to play. The idea behind this is, copy a function from nature and apply the same thing to a day today application. This way we can work without unbalancing the nature. Just imagine a world with no artificial buildings, cars and all other equipments. Only the equipments using “Biomimicry”. A building that acts like a tree, it gathers water and filter air.
There are lots of places where we can apply these methods. http://asknature.org is a place to talk about these. They give free information and ideas to design. They have a database full of nature’s best design ideas, organized by function and explained with illustrations.
Some of the ideas are,
How does most of the plants, butterflies, etc … stay clean.

Have you ever seen a plant or butterflies wash their surfaces by expending energy or using chemical detergents. I think not. What is the magic behind this? It is simply because their complex topography interacts with the physics of water molecules. Lotusan® exterior coating has use this simple but a valuable principle into practice. This paint get cleaned out after the mere rinse of a rain shower.
The architecture of leaves use for a building
Crystal Palace in London is the best example for this. This was build in 1851. Joseph Paxton is the creator of this glass building. He mimicked the ribs and struts of the giant water-lily to provide the support needed to make a strong, rigid building.
Soil Ecosystem using multiple organisms.
This system converts raw sewage, wastewater, and food waste into high quality irrigation water. Biolytix® system has use this principle. It immediately removes solid wastes. Then selected worms, beetles, and microscopic organisms convert the waste into structured humus, which acts as a filter to turn the waste into garden irrigation. Without using any kind of chemical it cleans waste and produces irrigation water. There are endless applications.
There are endless applications. Try making your own.
